With their bright autumnal colors and sudden appearance in the changing season, adults of this species are iconic in Japan, where they are known as "Akiakane" or "Akatanbo". In prehistoric times, they relied on natural wetlands. When humans began cultivating rice paddies in Japan, these dragonflies benefited greatly from the sudden expansion of their favored habitat: grassy flooded areas full of mosquitoes and flies.
