One of the world’s most colorful weevils, this species and others in its genus live in New Guinea and surrounding islands. Like other beetles, weevils undergo complete metamorphosis. Eggs are well-hidden and hatch into caterpillar-like grubs with a singular focus on eating.
After pupating, the weevil takes on its famous, charismatic form with a long rostrum (snout). These specialized mouthparts allow weevils to bore into vegetation. Eupholus feeds on wild yam, which is poisonous to most other animals. Its bright colors warn would-be predators that this weevil makes an unpleasant meal.
Double-posted, soft enamel pin with epoxy. Originally from the June 2024 Bug Box.
