An exceptional ambush predator, the orchid mantis is also a master of deception. It fools both prey and would-be predators by mimicking the wild orchids of its tropical Southeast Asian habitat.

Climbing up to a blossom, the delicate-looking mantis blends in perfectly and waits patiently. Wandering insects approach, expecting a sweet treat of nectar, and are caught in a flash by the hunter’s raptorial claws.

It’s not just bugs that are fooled - human naturalists have been known to mistake this mantis for a carnivorous flower. Fortunately for them, they were all too big to be eaten.
