European mole crickets (Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa) are large, extraordinary-looking insects, with front legs adapted especially for shoveling dirt. Males create shallow tunnels from which they call to females, who fly on favorable nights.
After mating, the female lays her eggs in the soil of a brood chamber, where she guards and cleans them. She will continue to stay with them after they hatch for a few more weeks, as they forage for plant roots and invertebrates underground. Nymphs can take up to three years to reach adulthood, and most of their lives are spent hidden away in the earth.
This life-sized pin measures approximately 2.5 inches long. Soft enamel + epoxy, double posted.
