Despite being very common throughout the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, this tiny “stretch spider” is seldom seen at home amongst the pines, where its spindly legs and festive colors blend seamlessly with the trees’ needles. Their orb webs, which are loose and somewhat messy, may be easier to spot than the spiders themselves.
Tetragnatha viridis is extraordinary for its ability to live and grow through the winter, when they feed on the few invertebrates, like springtails, that are still active in the cold months. Green long-jawed orb weavers are sometimes spotted against a fresh snow, where they suddenly stand out as living ornaments.
