This spider has many names, including the "Yellow Garden Spider" and "Black and Yellow Argiope". Their habit of leaving a zig-zag pattern in the middle of their web has also given them the common name "Writing Spider". It's said that E.B. White found the inspiration for Charlotte's Web by observing an Argiope spider.
In much of its native range, the Yellow Garden Spider reaches full size around October, making it a classic Halloween season sighting.
