Nocturnal Dung Scarab Beetle Pin
The ancient Egyptians were fascinated by dung beetles and used them extensively in their art. (You’re probably familiar with their more euphemistic name of “sacred scarabs”.) As the sun god Ra was said to roll the sun across the horizon to be renewed every day, the hard-working beetle rolling its burden became one of his symbols.
The scarab also became associated with rebirth and renewal, as the next generation of shiny new beetles always emerged from their parents’ burrows.
Recently, scientists have become interested in this beetle for another reason: it is the only known insect to use the Milky Way for navigation. For an animal with seemingly little brainpower, it’s a miraculous feat.
